Street View comes to Guatemala

Thank you to GEB reader Adino for letting us know that Street View has recently come to Guatemala.

We were not able to find any Mayan pyramids captured in Street View other than glimpses of them through the trees, but there are user submitted photos available.

The Street View camera also took a boat ride on Lake Atitlán.

Street View comes to Tunisia and a Vanuatuan volcano

Google has recently added Street View for Tunisia and the island of Ambrym, Vanuatu.

Tunisia has some interesting architecture, including mosques, churches and even ancient Roman ruins.

The blue outlines for Tunisia are not yet visible in Google Earth, but the Street View is accessible. Still, it is much easier to explore with Google Maps.

Volcano on Ambrym, Vanuatu

Ambrym is a volcanic island in the archipelago of Vanuatu that features one of the largest boiling lava lakes in the world. Google recently visited it with the Street View Trekker. Read more about it here.

The blue outlines for Vanuatu are not yet visible in Google Earth, and it doesn’t appear to be possible to access the Vanuatu Street View via Google Earth at present. So use Google Maps instead.

Street View comes to Ghana and Senegal

Google has recently added Street View for the countries Senegal and Ghana. Some of the imagery is as old as 2015.

Other countries in Africa with Street View include South Africa and Botswana, which have extensive coverage. Uganda has Street View in its capital Kampala and a few parks. Kenya and Tanzania so far only have a few game parks covered.

Street View comes to Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands

Thank you to GEB reader Adino for letting us know that Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands recently received Street View.

Note that the round dots are user-submitted photos and not Google’s Street View. The user-submitted photo markers come and go over time as the algorithm that decides which to show at this zoom level doesn’t always pick the same ones. Also note that one of the red patches in Madagascar is not Street View but a change to the base map. There are also tiny changes globally to the coastlines, suggesting Google used some new data to improve on them.

Street View comes to Albania and Montenegro

Thank you to GEB reader Adino for letting us know that Albania and Montenegro have recently received Street View.

Our ‘changes’ map above also picks out some other interesting features. Google has added land to the northern coast of Greenland. This may be due to the availability of better satellite imagery or it may have to do with melting ice making the coast line more visible. Also, Google Maps has recently started showing more of the blue circles for user submitted photos even when zoomed out.

Indonesia and the Philippines have also seen significant additions to their Street View coverage.

Google has also added an ‘expand’ button to the overview map in the Google Maps version of Street View which allows a split-screen mode. This makes exploring Street View much easier.
