Video for Flying with Google Earth Flight Simulator

September 3, 2007

Here you can see a video I’ve created showing some basic flying tips with Google Earth’s new flight simulator mode (download the latest Google Earth V4.2). It also shows some fancier flying in the Swiss Alps. Available on YouTube:

NOTE: The first video clip is flying the SR22 – a slower plane. You won’t be able to take off with the F-16 until you are going much faster (about 300).
Read my basic flying tips article for more details on how to use and fly in Google Earth’s flight simulator.

Great video Frank. Suppose someone will have to model an aircraft carrier for you now. I could sit here all afternoon watching vids like this.

Before starting up the flight sim, turn on the 3D Buildings layer in the sidebar. Any layers you enable before takeoff should be available when you fly. you can also control the sidebar within the flight sim and highlight pushpins.

Can someone tell me how do I do to fly at a steady altitude, I am not able to fly at the same altitude, the plane is always going up or down, and I have to be correcting the direction all the time.
    Thanks

the compass heading has disappeared from the top centre of the screen in the flight simulator have you any suggestions on how to retrieve it ?

For the Flight Simulator HUD to be completely visible the GE window needs to be close to square in aspect ratio. If the window is too wide, the compass will disappear. A lot of people with wide screens, who turn on the full-screen mode, wonder what happened to the compass…

Aah.Thank goodness. At last I realize that I am not the only person tearing their hair out trying to start Flight Simulator. I was beginning to think I was a congenital idiot.

hey everyone, to get 3D buildings in flight mode you must, strangely enough, enter flight simulator then click ‘view’ near file, and select sidebar to bring it back. Then just select 3D building again, click back onto the main screen and you’re ready to go
    hope it helps
