New Google Earth Imagery – August 5th, 2014

August 21, 2014

[Update: The map and KML in this post automatically updates as Google updates their Maps Gallery version. As of this update, the map being displayed is for August 13th, 2014.]

It appears Google pushed out some fresh imagery updates a couple of weeks ago. Thanks to sharp-eyed GEB reader ‘Maarten’ for letting us know about it.

To see which areas have been updated, see the map below from Google’s Maps Gallery.

You can also view it in Google Earth, using this KML file. The new imagery is in both Google Earth and Google Maps.

It is important to remember that although the update was done on August 5th, the actual imagery is slightly older. Most of it seems to have been taken some time in the last two years, although some is quite recent – where I live in Cape Town, South Africa, the new imagery is from June 11th, 2014.

It needs to hurry up. It’s now got the point in many places where it is totally unusable things have changed so much since the last aerial shot.
    Cambridge, UK is 9/10/2006!
We had the streetview camera down our road the other day though. So now they’ve done the Streetview and then redone it twice since the last aerial view was done and I’d guess the Streetview updates involve a lot more work.

Sometimes new imagery goes straight into the historic layer as it is not up to googles standards. In the case of Cambridge, there is imagery from 2007 & 2008 in the historic layer. Not as new as some, but better than 2006.

They completely missed most of the streets in my city, and the one I live on.
    So don’t complain.

If you use GE in the European Union you would have been very lucky to spot any updates – only recently published in the Gallery – as there is virtually no new imagery there.

It was the same at the last update, so is Google sending out some sort of message?

I believe the update was mostly satellite imagery, and much of Europe already has higher quality aerial imagery. At least thats my guess based on the patterns.

The updated imagery for Maputo, Mozambique is smaller than what is indicated in the gallery or by the kml file, covering the central area of the city only.

they are not updating the historical imagery bar with the new imagery they add every time they make an update on GE! so we can’t see what is new, only the old base imagery…..GE is starting to suck @ this thing !

Today the map shows the update of Aug. 26th. I missed the Aug. 13th update. Does anyone has a printscreen of that map?
