New Google Earth Imagery – May 9, 2013

May 9, 2013

Along with their updated Android app and new Timelapse tool, Google has just pushed out a large imagery update to much of the world. Thanks to ‘Munden’ for being the first to let us know about it.

odessa

As is almost always the case, you can use Google Maps to determine for sure whether or not a specific area is fresh. This new imagery isn’t in Google Maps yet, so you can compare Earth vs. Maps to see what’s new; the fresh imagery is already in Google Earth, but the old imagery is still in Google Maps. If you compare the two side-by-side and they’re not identical, that means that you’ve found a freshly updated area in Google Earth!

Some of the updated areas include:

  • Guam: Hagatna
  • India: New Delhi
  • Iran: Bushehr, Tehran
  • Italy: Mestre, Venice
  • Northern Mariana Islands: Saipan
  • Pakistan: Islamabad
  • Turkey: Uskudar
  • United States: Florida (full length of the Florida Keys), Louisiana (Baton Rouge), New Mexico (Albuquerque), Texas (Odessa)

If you find any other updated areas, please leave a comment and let us know!

Barcelona – Venezuela, has new 2013/4 imagery.

Strange to see a new update when a previously unannounced April 16th small update was released in the imagery updates KMZ, but has yet to be integrated in the history layer.

I just realized that the southern sections of the Florida Keys were updated in the previous month. I don’t recall making comparisons down there, but seeing that the northern half was March 7th, I assumed that the imagery in the southern half (March 8th) was also new. Well, the northern bits are new anyway. 🙂

Also: Guadeloupe, the harbor area of Pointe-a-Pitre

I routinely check for updates for my location and have been continually dismayed that since 2007 my location is still old. Calamba Laguna Philippines.

Sofia was updated back in April, not in the current image set. As for Colorado, I haven’t seen any updates.

Can anyone tell me the month when the date at which the last imagery of Kent, uk was taken please.

Kent, like most of the UK is a patchwork of imagery of various dates, and the date, in US month/day/year format, is displayed on the left hand side of the bottom margin of the GE page once you have zoomed in (but not sure if this is on mobile versions of GE). However, in many cases these are clearly not the actual dates of photography as you will see for example deciduous trees in full leaf at mid winter dates, but the years seem generally correct. Imagery in Kent is good quality but averages around five years old.

I should have added that you may find more up to date imagery in “historical imagery” – via the clock icon in the menu bar. Why Google put it there is something of a mystery, but such newer stuff may have quality issues.

I remember Slovenia had StreetView some years ago, but the Slovenian government made Google remove those pics.

The 8 May KMZ is finally available … but don’t get too exited, it’s modest, and Venice appears to be the only significant update in Europe.
