Burning Man 2010 in Google Earth

September 3, 2010

We covered some neat things with Burning Man (a very popular annual event that is “an experiment in community, radical self-expression, and radical self-reliance”) back in 2006 and 2007, and they’ve done some more cool stuff this year.
GEB reader Jeff has shared an image that was captured by GeoEye a few days ago that shows many of the participants forming a giant peace sign around the “man” in the center of the city. Here’s the pic:

In addition, GeoEye has already published a fresh image to their “Featured Imagery” layer in Google Earth. You can find the layer titled “GeoEye featured Imagery” under the “More” section of your layers. Fly to this KML and turn the layer on, and you’ll see something like this:

There will likely be other imagery coming in over the next few days. If you come across anything noteworthy, share your finds in the comments below.

Just back from BM and it was an awesome year. Nearly 300 art projects on playa, fantastic fire effects (thanks Nate Smith for the 300+ ft plume of fire on Friday evening), the dance venues were unbelievable. I attended two weddings (well I sort of missed most of one to see Nate’s project). Attendance set a record with nearly 49,000 as of Friday.
Monday had rain and a spectacular double rainbow with frost lat that night, then warm and near perfect weather (for the playa that is) through the temple burn on Sunday.
Thanks all who contributed, shared, slaved, created, worked, and attended. And thanks to Google for their wonderful GEOeye sat photos each year – they are amazing…

Where is the photo that was to be taken September 2nd at 11:41AM?
Many of us knew that was the time the picture would be taken and have made various human art pieces around the Playa and streets.

Is it possible to see a zoom in on the peace sign so you can see yourself in the crowd?

ya the only picture on the 2nd that I can find is really poor quality, the only thing you can make out is the shape of the city and big things like centre camp

I am sure the satellite image is coming soon… right? We are all really excited to see this high resolution image! Especially me since I am familiar with these in my mapping experience! Thank you Geo Eye for this opportunity! Hopefully it was a donation to the citizens of BRC. 😉 Keep up the great work! …a great friend of satellite imagery.

http://twitpic.com/2p2bpz is where you can find the highest quality image available. It’s not the best, but at least it is there. GeoEye says they didn’t take a higher resolution version. You can see the Human Peace sign I made at around 5:50 and G. The water truck was just ready to come by 2 minutes before the photo and luckily we were able to get up, ask him not to spray, and get back in place in time. Ron from Jungle Camp helped me gather people. Anyone with contact info on them please let them know Ranger ScoobyDoo lost their info.

Please give them my contact info.
I know there were other Rangers at 6pm and G (or H?) who took ground photos from the peace sign. Please forward them to me if anyone has them.

I believe the higher resolution is an image taken from September 1st.

The “GeoEye Featured Imagery” in Google Earth is significantly higher resolution than the http://twitpic.com/2p2bpz version.
Also, based on the position of various vehicles, the two images were taken at two different points in time.

The Thursday photo taken IS NOTthe highest resolution that Geoeye can take so stop saying that!!!! Why is the Google Earth photo taken on Wednesday far superior quality and resolution??? WTF?
