Amazing tour of the 1977 Tenerife Airport disaster

April 29, 2010

Peter Olsen is at it again. We recently showed you the neat 3D Disney Monorail that he created, and now he’s built a 3D animated tour of the 1977 Tenerife Airport disaster.

The tour is very impressive, and it covers the tragic events in great detail. He shows flight paths leading up to both planes arriving at Tenerife, and then 3D animations of the mistakes that led to the disaster.
This tour is an excellent example of how Google Earth can be used for educational purposes. You get the geographical reference of the planes arriving at the airport, information windows explaining what is occurring, and 3D models being moved around the airport to demonstrate the sequence of events.
You can download the tour KMZ file or read more about it in the 3D Warehouse. Nice work Peter!

Great job. Did you know that you can create such tours with the Snoovel Tourdirector? Not easy to use, but much easier than Google Earth.

Almost all images in the tour are question marks instead of images… Something looks broken.

Awesome work Peter. The tension was killing me. When the jet started for take off the feeling was terrible. I never expected to experience such feelings while looking at google earth. I would love to see a tutorial on how to achieve the object animations.
