Finland’s Helsinki Now Has 3D Buildings in Google Earth

Late last week, Google released an update to the 3D Buildings layer in Google Earth. If you turn the layer on, and fly to “Helsinki, Finland” they have also added most of the city with 3D Building models with photo-realistic textures.

Helsinki Finland in 3D in Google Earth

This adds to the growing list of cities which Google has added to the Google Earth layers with 3D buildings. Google has not released any details on how the cities were modeled. But, I suspect they are using data from a variety of sources using techniques such as photogrammetry from aerial photos, possible use of Lidar data and photos from Street View, and licensing data from various 3D city modeling firms. Here is a list of recent posts summarizing cities added to the 3D Buildings layer.

About Frank Taylor

Frank Taylor started the Google Earth Blog in July, 2005 shortly after Google Earth was first released. He has worked with 3D computer graphics and VR for many years and was very impressed with this exciting product. Frank completed a 5.5 year circumnavigation of the earth by sailboat in June 2015 which you can read about at Tahina Expedition, and is a licensed pilot, backpacker, diver, and photographer.

  1. Ick of the East says:

But when are they going to update Google Earth so those of us with 64bit computers can see all these wonderful textures?
It’s been a long, long time.

  2. They’ve also updated Warsaw 3D a little adding only some buildings from sorroundings of zones previously fully covered.
Also I noticed that some less realistic user 3D content was changed to more photorealistic semi-automated of their own production.
Question is if they ask the creator to let them change it or they just did it. Or maybe the creator was shamed that their models are much better than his and asked them for himself to change 🙂

  3. Also the new areas in Warsaw have sometimes trees captured as a part of building in 3D. Looks like almost fully automaticaly generated (I guess nobody who would look at it for more than few minutes wouldn’t let it go like that)…

  4. Frank Taylor, There has been a street view update. I just noticed new street view in Switzerland, Portugal, Probably more France and Italy, Taiwan and that is it. Maybe Canada, Singapore, Mexico, And many Europe countries will come next.

  5. Prague has now also updated 3D model with more parts of the city covered. From photo-realistic textures errors (for example in some narrow streets roof of opposite building can be seen in down part of the texture) i think that they are made from aerial photos.
