Formula One Circuit Tour – Car Simulation

An interesting Google Earth KML file was created by Romyn Perret-Green and hosted on his site Apparently Romyn. who is an IT industry veteran, has recently become enamored with KML. He also appears to be a Formula One fan and has released a KML file which really helps you visualize the 2009 Formula One season. You can download his KML file here . He has tracks and turns data for many of this year’s races around the world, and background data on the various teams. But, what I found really interesting is the visualization tool he’s created to show some of the tracks. Romyn created GE 5 Tours for some of the tracks that put you in the driver’s seat of a formula one race car and drives you around the track. Just look under one of the tracks for “Circuit Tours” and select it and open the folder. Then double-click on a “In Car” tour to start the tour. Here’s a YouTube of a direct screen capture from Google Earth of one of the tours (there is no audio – I’d like to see him add that!):

Some nice touches with the speedometer on the wheel showing approximate speeds around the course, and the wheel movement mimicking the turns. Nice work Romyn!

About Frank Taylor

Frank Taylor started the Google Earth Blog in July, 2005 shortly after Google Earth was first released. He has worked with 3D computer graphics and VR for many years and was very impressed with this exciting product. Frank completed a 5.5 year circumnavigation of the earth by sailboat in June 2015 which you can read about at Tahina Expedition, and is a licensed pilot, backpacker, diver, and photographer.

  1. I have seen new pictures in Panoramio in Google Earth, you could verify that.

  2. Hi Frank,
What an honour to be mentioned on your blog 🙂 – thank you for your article.
Glad you like the file and especially the “nice touches” – GE5 tours are indeed a great addition to what can now be achieved. I noticed, however, that your movie does look slightly different from my play back so I need to revisit how the screen overlays look on various screen resolutions so others see them as I do.
The basic data is there for ALL of this years circuits but the in-car Tours are slowly coming on-line. I added this weekends race, Bahrain, this morning and intend to add all the others as soon as I can – at the latest before each race takes place. (Juggling this and other KML projects with job-hunting at the mo 🙁 so time is short)
As for adding sound – that would be fantastic – but I suspect I would need to hook-up some REAL telemetry data to allow that to work correctly and be in-synch. So if there is anyone that can provide that please feel free to contact me. If one of the Formula One teams themselves want to do this I’d happily brand up the whole file with their colours/logo/car etc.
It’s also unfortunate that due to an “unworkaroundable” bug in GE (and the Plugin) the tours are best viewed with Terrain Off as at the low camera altitude they use the view tends to bounce around on circuits that are not flat. I’ve posted about this in the KML forums and hope Google fix it soon.
Again thanks for your comments and I hope your readers also enjoy the file.
    Kindest regards,
