Google Earth 5 Easter Egg: Talk to a Martian

February 4, 2009

Google has buried a cool easter egg in the new Mars feature of Google Earth 5. The new Mars feature is really awesome all by itself. It is just like Google Earth, but for Mars. Complete with 3D terrain, layers of information about the planet, high resolution satellite imagery, photos, and historical information about missions to Mars. But, the developers didn’t stop there.
Someone has discovered there is a nice little easter egg. Type “Meliza” in the search window while looking at Mars (look for the planet icon at the top of GE 5 and switch to Mars). This will fly you to a place on mars with a placemark labeled “MELIZA“. Click on that and the placemark bubble will open and start talking to you. The program is based on an old computer application called “Eliza” which simulates talking to someone (very poorly). But, it’s a classic easter egg for GE 5! via GoogleOperatingSystem

It is located directly next to the infamous Face on Mars, obviously the place where one should search for an alien artifact.

“Did you know that mars is the 4th planet from the Sun?” 🙂 the old method if the artificial person didn’t understand your question .

Is there a possibility to add Meliza to your google talk contact list? Would be funny.

I like to talk evil with it. I mean in the sense of “YOU STINK!” or “SHUT YOUR MOUTH” just to see what it does. I mean, it is a voice simulator, so it probably doesn’t have an answer to everything.

Another possible easter egg. Type in Keeler Crater and look in the shadows. The above link is an enhanced photo of a “martian” in the shadows

If you type 42 in the chat box, Meliza says “42 is the answer to the ultimate question about life, the universe, and everything. Didn’t you know?”

Wonderful little easter egg, as always, it’s good to see Google has a sense of humor.
@Nicholas: What compelled you to type in 42?!

It’s a reference to the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Awesome, Google!
