Joey Wade has created some new 3D model time animations depicting flights of the Red Bull air races in London and Monument Valley. These animations pretty accurately depict the way the planes fly through the “cones” or “pylons” placed on the ground. Try the Red Bull London
file first. Wait until the green animating icon turns off (which indicates it is loading the animation files). I recommend you set the speed of the animation to slowest (click on the little round clock icon to the left of the time slider and set the “Animation speed” slider). Then select the “play” button to the right of the time slider. And, after you’ve seen that, check out the Red Bull Monument Valley.
For extra credit, try turning on the Google Earth flight simulator and see if you can fly the pylons! You’ll most likely have to do some advanced configuration file editing to get your plane to behave more like the Red Bull planes.
Here’s a YouTube video showing what these Red Bull air races look like in real life (Joey includes some videos in placemarks along with the GE files above):

About Frank Taylor
Frank Taylor started the Google Earth Blog in July, 2005 shortly after Google Earth was first released. He has worked with 3D computer graphics and VR for many years and was very impressed with this exciting product. Frank completed a 5.5 year circumnavigation of the earth by sailboat in June 2015 which you can read about at Tahina Expedition, and is a licensed pilot, backpacker, diver, and photographer.
Are you aware of anyone that’s posting file hacks for the crafts? Or has everyone just been playing around with it at the most?
By the way, that helicopter’s doing some wicked stalling loops!
Hello Frank,
For the Flight Simulator mode you mention in your article, I uploaded to the GE forum a .kml file with large Gates & directions for relocating the gates in Monument Valley. Also in the post is a short description on how to add in a Monument Valley AirStrip for the Flight Simulator. GE Post: http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showthreaded.php/Cat/0/Number/1009212
Hello again,
On another note, Gerardo64 has posted a good tutorial for creating .kml files with Spreadsheets, I posted a follow up for tips to generate animation to that Spreadsheet concept. Gerardo64’s Post: http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showthreaded.php/Cat/0/Number/550183
