3D Warehouse Open to All 3D KML Content

This is pretty cool. Google 3D Warehouse has been a repository for any SketchUp 3D Models. Google has just announced they have opened it up to allow any KML with 3D. This means you can now include KML files which do animations in Google Earth. Or other innovative 3D applications. For example, Joey Wade’s animation of the Blues Brothers bridge jump:

Now the many applications of 3D models for Google Earth by folks like Joey, James Stafford, Gerardo Paz, and many others can be uploaded to the 3D Warehouse. Here are just a few candidate examples I would like to see uploaded:

About Frank Taylor

Frank Taylor started the Google Earth Blog in July, 2005 shortly after Google Earth was first released. He has worked with 3D computer graphics and VR for many years and was very impressed with this exciting product. Frank completed a 5.5 year circumnavigation of the earth by sailboat in June 2015 which you can read about at Tahina Expedition, and is a licensed pilot, backpacker, diver, and photographer.

  1. Hello Frank,
I was able to upload a couple of .kmz’s to the 3D Warehouse, although models such as Red Bull gave me the error “3D Warehouse is unable to load this file. Model path in KML file does not match actual model path in KMZ.” I don’t have a clue what is causing the error. Will re-arrange folders within the model and try again at some later date. Blue’s Brothers and Bayou Air Tours by Southern Seaplane went up without flaw.

  2. interesting, does that mean there will be animated models in the “best of 3D warehouse” layer soon?

  3. Hi jpwade_bsu,
For the KMZ that won’t upload, try this.
    Unzip the KMZ file.
Edit the KML file that was inside and check the href tag in the Model section.
Make sure that the content of the href tag points to the correct path where the Collada (.dae) model file lives inside the KMZ (models are usually in a “models” sub-directory).
For example, if you have a “myModel.dae” file in a “models” sub-directory, the href tag would contain “models/myModel.dae”.
You can find examples and more info at:

  4. Hello Lori,
Thanks for the input, I noted on the 3D warehouse page criteria “Includes exactly one KML file”. the animated files that have multiple tags seems to be the culprit. Many of my animated files are built seperatley and dropped into a common folder and saved while in GE. For example the Wright Brothers model at the GEWarehouse http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=f15d8621d798407971d5846b5195a219 has all dae instances are within one , whereas the model dowloaded from the GE Community Modeling & Annontations post, has multiple tags ,noted by the blue globes under places.

  5. Hey guys,
I tried uploading a model and got this error from 3d Warehouse:
KMZ contains an unrecognized file type.
When I unzip the file it looks like this:
The omsifull.jpg references an image overlay, but I tried uploading a version without the overlay and got the same error.
    Any idears?
