Google Earth 4.2 – Release notes wanted, new icons

August 26, 2007

Google still hasn’t updated the release notes for the new Google Earth 4.2. So I’m still discovering little things which have been updated in 4.2 from the last beta. We are well aware of some of the big changes like the new Sky and the new 3D photo viewer. But, I’m sure there are lots of smaller changes like the bug which kept the navigation gadget from going away when on automatic in 4.1 is now fixed. Last night, I noticed that the standard icons used for placemarks have changed. They are now more similar in style to the icons used in the layers and in Google My Maps. The image below shows the new choices (if you create a placemark and click on the icon button, this is what you see).

Ah thanks, I thought something was looking different , I just couldn’t place it ๐Ÿ™‚ I suppose a reminder if you want to keep a particular icon you should take a copy rather than just use the ones supplied!

These look like the same icons that are used in Google MyMaps (for the most part).

I’ve just noticed that you can now do directions searches in Thailand, that give you good results with all street names down to very small lanes.
So all of the road data seem to be there, but when the roads layer is turned on the roads are not visible (as they are in Google Maps).

Directions in Thailand are possible since several weeks. The fact of non visible streets also. The old inexact streets disappeared but the new ones didn’t appear.

The new icon list has less icons, so it converted many of my icons from two types (airplane and airplane in a circle) into one (airplane). This was a very much unwanted change, as much work had gone into differentiating the two locations in my .kmz file, types of airfields I had visited around the world. Does anyone perchance know how to use a backed up version of the .kmz file to recreate a listing using two different icons for the two types of locations I was tracking?
    Thanks for any help.

The old icons are available still, plus you can add your own custom icons to any KML file. The old icons can be found under windows in this directory:
    C:\Program Files\Google\Google Earth\res\pal2
There are also more in ..\pal3 through ..\pal5

I do not have a copy of the old pal2,pal3,pal4… in my Program Files folder. When I type the old path http://maps.google.com/mapfiles/kml/pal2/icon20.png I get the old Icon but when I use that path in my kml in Google Earth I get a different Icon? Where can I get the old Icons?

Same as Brian case, when I type the old path http://maps.google.com/mapfiles/kml/pal2/icon20.png in my Firefox I get the old Icon but when I use that path in my kml in Google Earth I get a different Icon?
Is there anybody who knows how to force GE to import the proper one?

I Googled “Old Google Earth Icons” and got this URL:
    http://www.cems.uwe.ac.uk/~cjwallac/apps/phpxml/showIcons.php

So what Frank? This doesn’t solve the problem.
Seems, the new GE suffer a bug disabling it to refer to http://maps.google.com/mapfiles/kml/*

I thought you wanted a copy of the old icons.
You can post your issue with GE 4.3 at the GE support forum: http://groups.google.com/group/earth-free/topics

Not to hijack a thread, but it does have to do with GE icons, I just started using GE and to be honest I sort of miss the comforting glow and assurance of coporate logos. (maybe I am a blue chip tool?) but I would love to see icons for target stores, and the golden arches, and other corporate stuff I could put in. by the way is there any place people put up GE icons to share.
    thanks

I was born and live in Cuba. I’d like Google Earth were available also for us. If you or whoever decides could understand that people are not the government, things would be a little better.
