More Roads, POI, 3D Buildings in Google Earth

Singapore roads, POIs, and buildings in Google EarthThere were some other significant changes made on Monday night which I failed to mention. Some of my readers pointed these out to me in E-mail or comments. Here are some interesting highlights:

  • Detailed Roads Layers for India and Singapore – Now you get major roads and streets with labels for the entire country for these two locations. These were already deployed in Google Maps, but are now available in Earth. The screenshot above is from Singapore.

  • Points of Interest for India, Singapore, and Brazil – Now you can turn on points of interest layers like Dining, Lodging, Parks and Recreation, and Shopping and get placemark icons for these types of businesses as you zoom in to major metropolitan areas.

  • Best of 3DWarehouse – This sub-layer to the 3D Buildings layer was updated adding hundreds of new buildings. There are well-known buildings added in cities all over the world, and lots of buildings added to Denver, New York, and other places. Please leave a comment if you find some unique buildings added worth highlighting.

Google made an announcement about the rest of the changes on Tuesday. But, I was doing some travel and caught a cold so I didn’t pay close enough attention. Sorry for not reporting this earlier! Here’s my updated summary of all the layer changes from Monday.

Woohoo! At last India is getting some attention! Now, all we need is some hi-res pictures. 😀

  2. Duncan Brinsmead says:

Edmonton now has a fair number of buildings.

  3. Duncan Brinsmead says:

Amherst, MA also now has nice buildings… a small downtown, but the storefront textures are very high resolution. Very nice economy in the way the textures are applied.

  4. smokeonit says:

berlin has more 3d buildings in the GE 3d layer… not many, but there were like 2 or 3 before where there are around 10 now….

  5. Deathcamel says:

There are some conspicuous holes in the old gray buildings in Portland, OR, most notably the KOIN Center and the Wells Fargo building. If I turn on the 3d warehouse link though, there seem to some nice textured models for these and other buildings, as well as a couple new bridges. No new buildings in the ‘best of’ layer though.

  6. I’m looking around New York with the Best-Of layer on, but I certainly don’t see “lots of new buildings”… can anyone point out what was added to this layer for New York?

  7. J – regarding New York, it looks like I jumped to a false conclusion there. I had noticed Google had created a bunch of new models in the 3D Warehouse for New York a few weeks ago, and assumed they would show up in the “Best of” layer – based on past experience. See what they have done here:
