Google Saturn

July 30, 2006

Saturn in Google EarthYou can see a very nice looking Saturn using Google Earth thanks to an excellent 3D textured model by a Google Earth Community member. Download this Google Earth Saturn model here . You will need to be using Google Earth 4.0+ (if you haven’t already downloaded it). You can spin the model and look at it from different angles. The Google Earth Saturn file was created by ‘barnabu’ and posted here. He used SketchUp and Paintshop Pro to create the rings and Blender for the globe texturing. Apparently Google Earh has some problems with rendering large 3D Models like this because you see some weird rendering artifacts in the rings at certain angles. But, overall the model looks really nice. I still think Google Earth should be extended to the rest of the universe like the nice open source program Celestia.

Don’t forget that NASA’s World Wind comes with the moon (with 3d terrain), Mars (with 3d terrain), Venus, and Jupiter, and there are add-ons/plugins for the rest of the planets (including rings where necessary).

It really should be the univers as a whole.
Start fromt he sun and go to the start of time.
It should also have a good update period. So we can see our space station and anything else that may pass thru our univers. That would be good TV viewing. we are all prett tired of our currant choice of TV viewing I am sure lol 😛 I’d love to wake up and flick on the sunrise over the Earth 🙂
