Movie Making Information for 300 in Google Earth
Warner Brothers has released a Google Earth file providing background information on the new movie 300 (based on Frank Miller's graphic novel about the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C). I guess this is an attempt to do some marketing using Google Earth, but this isn't a very sophisticated use of Google Earth. There are a few placemarks showing some of the locations of the shooting. The placemark descriptions either contain some links to video journals showing how the movie was made, or in the case of the ones in Greece some background information which was mostly just taken from Wikipedia. Of course, you have to view the movies in a web browser. A Google Maps Mashup would probably have been better. They have released a Google gadget so you can find the nearest movie location on the same page above. Again, a Google Maps mashup on the page would have been easier. If you like the movie, you might want to check out the file here
anyway. It will give you an opportunity to see these video clips which they probably will include on the DVD when it comes out.
Other movies have leveraged Google Earth's popularity to generate some marketing momentum. But, this one doesn't do much for marketing the movie in my opinion. Here are some other movie promotions using Google Earth
