The 2012 Giro d'Italia in Google Earth
This Saturday is the start of the 2012 Giro d'Italia bicycle race in Italy. It'll be the 95th edition of the race and should be an exciting event.
The folks at CyclingTheAlps.com, who have created excellent tours that we've shown you before, have created some great resources to help to follow the race.
First, they've created an overview of all the new stages where you can select each stage:

Once a stage is loaded you will now get a video fly over generated using Google Earth to give you a quick look at the complete stage:

They have another page that provides an overview of the race for each stage including 3D Tours, Profiles, Street View Tours and more. Plus, they've created an Android App that allows you to watch fly overs of all the stages and climbs in high detail and explore the routes on a map.
Here is one more video to show what they've done with Google Earth. This is the final stage of the race, which is an individual time trial in Milan:
If you have any interest in the 2012 Giro d'Italia, the features provided by the team at Cycling The Alps should be of great value to you.

Explore baseball's opening day in Google Earth
Today is the opening day of the 2012 baseball season in the US, and Google is showing off a bunch of great tools to help you enjoy it.
The best is a new video that they've created that shows off the various Major League Baseball stadiums in 3D inside of Google Earth:
You can also explore those stadiums using this collection from EarthSwoop,
which flies you around the stadiums via the Google Earth Plug-in.
Google also encourages you to use Google Maps for the weather, Navigation (for Android) to get the games, and StreetView to tour the outside of the stadiums. Read all about these great features over on the Google Lat Long Blog.

Rally racing in Google Earth
Late last year we told you about YoubeQ, a social network that exists inside of Google Earth. It had some interesting ideas, and they're starting to expand out.
The latest from them is rally game that runs via the Google Earth Plugin. The game itself is still a bit rough around the edges, but it's very ambitious. They use a very impressive physics engine, and it's certainly the best Google Earth Plugin-based racing game we've seen so far (though "Drive the A-Team Van" is still pretty awesome).

They've build a Chrome Web App for the game, which already has over 15,000 installations, or you can simply play the game through a standard browser window at youbeq.com/rally.
Going forward, they plan other gaming applications inside of YoubeQ and it could become a great gaming platform for Google Earth. For more about this rally game, try it for yourself using the links above or watch the video below to see it in action:

Exploring March Madness in Google Earth
In the US, it's that time of year ago -- the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. Millions have filled out their brackets in hopes of successfully guessing the outcome of the 67 basketball games occurring over the next few weeks.
As they did last year, Google has created some fun resources to display geographic information about the tournament in Google Earth.
To start, they've created a map of all the schools participating in the tournament. You can view the map in Google Maps or Google Earth (with this KML file
).

With many of the 14 tournament venues having 3D models, Google has created a video to show them off. Some of the stadiums are quite impressive!
My bracket is still holding together pretty well, though I expect the games this weekend will kill it. How is yours doing?

Showing off your ski runs in Google Earth
If you're a skier, you've probably looked at various ways to track your runs throughout the day so you could view them on Google Earth when you were finished. Frank first shared some ideas about how to do this back in 2006 and we looked a few others last winter.
Those solutions all still work quite well, but a new product from Recon Instruments blows them all away on the "cool factor".

The "MOD" and "MOD Live" products feature a dashboard that you can view inside of your goggles while skiing that show your current speed, altitude, distance traveled -- it can even provide analytics on your jumps (distance, airtime, etc)! This video shows a bit more about what the MOD products can do:
After your day on the slopes is over, you can view all of your tracks on a slick Google Earth Plug-in powered page on their site:

They start at $299 and can be purchased from the Recon Instruments website. If you ever get a chance to try them out, please leave a comment and let us know how they work out for you.
