New Google Earth Imagery - December 7

Google Earth has just rolled out some fresh imagery for us! Thanks to GEB reader 'Andreas' for being the first to let us know about it.

As is almost always the case, you can use Google Maps to determine for sure whether or not a specific area is fresh. This new imagery isn't in Google Maps yet, so you can compare Earth vs. Maps to see what's new; the fresh imagery is already in Google Earth, but the old imagery is still in Google Maps. If you compare the two side-by-side and they're not identical, that means that you've found a freshly updated area in Google Earth!

[UPDATED -- 7-December, 8:22am EST]

  • France: Demigny, Paris -- thanks 'Andreas'
  • Germany: Angermunde, Delmenhorst -- thanks 'Andreas'
  • India: Chennai
  • Norway: Jorpeland -- thanks 'Andreas'
  • Romania: Oradea -- thanks 'bogdan'
  • Spain: Barcelona
  • Thailand: Ratchaburi -- thanks 'Andy'
  • United States: Arkansas (Pine Bluff), Georgia (Athens)

If you find any other updated areas, please leave a comment and let us know!

@ Noel - IRELAND - thanks for your info, but you don't comment on the very mixed quality of the images there, particularly the very poor dark and cloudy patches. In fact in the majority of the updated areas the quality of 'historic' images is better than the new. This continuing issue is making me hope that my favourite places on GE are not updated!

Paris was updated, but I don't like the quality of the imagery. It has the same unnatural purple-like color as many of the other recent updates in France. Not really an improvement...

I am SO glad Colorado Springs has been finally updated. We went from 2006 to 10/22/2011 imagery. Much of Pikes Peak still bleached out but you can see the train on the summit :)

PARIS - it's good to see high res aerial photography for this great city ... only problem is (judging from the length of shadows and vegetation colours) that it was flown in late September/early October, leaving many of the 'deep' streets and courtyards in shadow which hides detail.

It might be possible for Google to modify contrast, aside from the wider issue of colour balance, but the only real answer in densely packed cities at these latitudes in the northern hemisphere is to get images flown in June/July.

All the technical and information superstructure now built on GE and Maps is only as good as the quality of the foundation of images.

SW corner of Winnipeg, Manitoba, in Canada, has been updated.

Posted by: tofurkey at December 8, 2011 1:46 PM

They've already pushed the images to Google Maps. I guess they're eager to get this dealt with being near the holidays.

KMZ for 7 December update is available / will have arrived

Posted by: Chris at December 9, 2011 4:24 PM

Interesting today a second strip appeared in BiH right next to the first one dated 11 April 2011 but are not included updated kmz file. And now they can be accessed only going through historical imagery. Why? They are clearly better then the previous in that there where no hd images for the area.
