Thanks to sharp-eyed GEB reader ‘Andy’, we see that Google has just pushed some fresh imagery into Google Earth. It’s been a longer delay than we normally see between updates, but it looks like it might be a fairly substantial one!

As is usually the case, you can use Google Maps to determine for sure whether or not a specific area is fresh. This new imagery isn’t in Google Maps yet, so you can compare Earth vs. Maps to see what’s new; the fresh imagery is already in Google Earth, but the old imagery is still in Google Maps. If you compare the two side-by-side and they’re not identical, that means that you’ve found a freshly updated area in Google Earth!

I’ve noticed they have eased up the coastal editing in bays and estuaries, at least in the locations I’ve been looking. The bay near Qingdao used to be heavily edited and mostly only visible if you clicked the historical button. Now, the bay is entirely visible.

@ Dipa – have you checked that your operating system is supported by Google Earth 6.0 – some older systems like Mac OSX 10.4 (Tiger) are not supported. But if you go to the Google Earth download page http://www.google.com/earth/download/ge/agree.html
and click on advanced set up you can try installing GE 5.2 which still, for example, supports OSX 10.4.

The KML has been updated!
A patch of new high-ish res imagery dated March 2011 has appeared over the Solway Firth (England/Scotland) covering Annan, Glencaple, New Abbey, Silloth, but it’s almost uselessly dark.
Oh dear, Google have updated parts of Scotland, but called it “England” (where there are no updates) on the LatLong blog in the post on the July update!
There are also issues with the image quality of the updates in Scotland: a patch west of Annan is so dark it must have been shot at dusk, and around Stornaway in the Outer Hebrides extensive cloud now obscures what was previously clear and fortunately still is in ‘historic’.
As asked before, don;t Google get the imagery checked before uploading?
Please update Historical imagery for Connecticut!
