New Google Earth Imagery - March 17
It's been a little while since the most recent imagery update, but thanks to sharp-eyed GEB reader 'Munden', we're now aware that Google has just pushed out a new update!

As is usually the case, you can use Google Maps to determine for sure whether or not a specific area is fresh. This new imagery isn't in Google Maps yet, so you can compare Earth vs. Maps to see what's new; the fresh imagery is already in Google Earth, but the old imagery is still in Google Maps. If you compare the two side-by-side and they're not identical, that means that you've found a freshly updated area in Google Earth!

IMAGERY DATES - can anyone explain what GE imagery dates mean? The new imagery date for the northern half of Wales is April 2009, but the deciduous trees in full leaf suggesting a later, summer date for image capture, However, this is not as potentially misleading as the 1 January 2006 date of the imagery replaced where the hedgerows are full of white May (shrub) blossom.
Is it, for example, simply the date an agreement with a supplier was signed at some point after capture?

Chris -- Great question. I think it's more likely a bug, as that's intended to show the imagery the date was taken. I'll see what I can find out.

New imagery for Asheville, NC, dated 10/20/2010. Caught a political rally in front of City Hall for Rep. Heath Shuler featuring Bill Clinton. Note the black SUVs behind the stage.

Nothing new I've spotted yet, but I sometimes wonder about the image dates myself. Sometimes an image has one date, then an update happens and the date changes, but the image remains the same. Many of these changes are simply one day earlier, but why does the same image get redated?

I just viewed the section for Franklin County, Massachusetts and think it is a bad image. Nearly all of it has thin cloud cover, with some areas nearly obscured. Is there a way to communicate this issue to Google?

ISLAY Scotland) - @ tofu -lovers of single malt Scotch should not get too carried away as half the island is still covered by default low res imagery unchanged since the launch of GE, and, like the rest of Scotland, improvement of imagery is painfully slow.
Posted by: Chris at March 18, 2011 6:06 AM
@ Chris - yeah, but the south coast distillers are now in hi-res and I can see my fav, Lagavulin clearly now!

There are a couple of large strips of new imagery from August 2010 in Canterbury of New Zealand, featuring Rangiora, Darfield and Rakaia. As per usual, the apparent Christchurch section is currently blocked by the high res 2009 stuff.

@ tofu - Islay was unusual in having extensive Street View coverage before any high res GE imagery, and I think you can get drive by views of all the Islay (and Jura) distilleries - certainly of Lagavulin. There's also a great 369 Cities image of the still room at Bruachladdich.

Could someone post the .KML file for this update?
thank's
Posted by: legolego at March 21, 2011 5:29 AM
@ legolego - you can download the latest imagery update KML from 'Google Earth Gallery' (Google that term. the URL is vast), but as I write the latest KML relates to the 23 February update.
Posted by: Chris at March 21, 2011 1:10 PM
@ legolego - a further point - I think if a KML is saved to 'My Places' (where it is likely to go anyway) GE then send further updates automatically, whilst previous updates are also saved in 'My Places'. This is a service which I managed to get, but the explanation in GE Gallery is not entirely clear, and maybe another GEB reader can clarify. Also there appears to be no date in the Gallery for the latest KML.
Posted by: Chris at March 21, 2011 1:32 PM
KML for 17 March update now available (from GE Gallery or automatically in 'My Places').
Shows large number of smaller updates worldwide.
Posted by: Chris at March 21, 2011 6:42 PM
IMAGE QUALITY - had a chance now to look round the new imagery in Europe revealed by the KML. There's good stuff, but too much of poor quality - false colours, too dark, 'washed out', long shadows, extensive clouds - and, in particular, the updates in Ireland result in a disappointing mess.
It seems that standards are slipping, and, not for the first time, the question must be asked - do GE or their sub-contractors check quality before uploading?

The area of Farwell, Michigan is 6 years old, when will it be updated?
Posted by: Frank at March 30, 2011 6:24 AM
The imagery for Northern Iterland is (for the most part) still the dreadful old blurred satellite images that have been there since the beginning. It is scandalous that Google hasn't (bothered to? been able to?) obtained any up to date aerial images of this part of the United Kingdom.
