New Google Earth Imagery - September 21

As pointed out by an anonymous GEB reader, Google has just pushed out a new imagery update for us!

imagery-update.jpg

As is almost always the case, you can use Google Maps to determine for sure whether or not a specific area is fresh. This new imagery isn't in Google Maps yet, so you can compare Earth vs. Maps to see what's new; the fresh imagery is already in Google Earth, but the old imagery is still in Google Maps. If you compare the two side-by-side and they're not identical, that means that you've found a freshly updated area in Google Earth!

[UPDATED -- 21-September, 10:16pm]

  • Colombia: Bogota -- thanks 'CarlosA'
  • Indonesia: Various -- thanks 'okasbali'
  • Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur
  • United States: California (various cities), Colorado (Denver), Florida (Miami), North Carolina (various cities), Ohio (Cincinnati), Oregon (Portland), South Dakota (Sioux Falls) -- thanks 'Chrisk'

If you find any other updated areas, please leave a comment and let us know!

Christchurch, NZ has post-quake imagery, but you can't see much yet as it's not in the history layer and is still being blocked by the hi-res March 2009 stuff.

The lead photo is looking north along the Columbia River between Washington and Oregon, just west of the Washington Dept. of Fish & Wildlife Shillapoo Wildlife Area. I've spent so much time studying the airphotos there that I recognized it right away.

The official KMZ network link is already updated. Hopefully that means the history imagery will update quickly too.

where do i found the kmz

Posted by: Zlatan at September 23, 2010 9:38 AM

Zlatan - a KML which automatically arrives in the Places panel with all the latest imagery updates - outlined in thin red lines when the KML is opened - is offered in the official Google Earth Gallery http://www.google.com/gadgets/directory?synd=earth&cat=featured
Earlier updates are also retained in Places if you wish

Christchurch, NZ has post-quake imagery dated 03 Sep. The earthquake was at 4am on the 4th, but at 10am (photo time?) it was still the 3rd in parts of the USA.

Correction: I was looking just outside the Christchurch city area. They have *not* released the city portion of that imagery (yet).

SF Imagery from 9/11/10; I just noticed the homes destroyed by the fire in nearby San Bruno on the 9th.
