New Google Earth Imagery - February 9
Hot on the heels of last night's StreetView update, we find ourselves with a bunch of fresh imagery to enjoy, too! Ottawa, Canada and parts of Ireland have been updated, among others. See the bottom of this post for the full (and oft-updated) list.
[UPDATE 10-FEB -- The "updated areas" KML file is now available. Download it here
.]

As always, you can use Google Maps to determine for sure whether or not a specific area is fresh. This new imagery isn't in Google Maps yet, so you can compare Earth vs. Maps to see what's new; the fresh imagery is already in Google Earth, but the old imagery is still in Google Maps. If you compare the two side-by-side and they're not identical, that means that you've found a freshly updated area in Google Earth!
[UPDATED -- 9-Feb, 6:08pm EST]
- Canada: Ottawa area (thanks 'Justin')
- China: Some areas in the south (thanks 'jonas91')
- Haiti: Imagery in the Port au Prince area is now from January 25 (thanks 'Munden')

I'm sure there are many others, so if you find any other updated areas, please leave a comment and let us know.

in Port au Prince Airport in Haiti, there are two planes on the runway, a small jet and a USAF millitary plane ( a C-130 ?)
and another plane is about to land.
any explanation?
Posted by: Alsay at February 9, 2010 4:11 PM
ok, not a C-130. its bigger
but there is i guess a C-130 on the apron

For Canada, in addition to Ottawa's aerial imagery update, large areas in Ontario and Quebec now have updated satellite base imagery at a higher resolution than we previously had! (on Google Earth it says it's CNES/SPOT imagery)

Alsay, I don't know what sort of 'explanation' you want about the Haitian airport. It's relief supplies being flown in. Incidentally, the larger aircraft is a C-17 Globemaster III.

@Munden, what i wanted to say is, why the runway is not cleared for the coming plane? the apron is pretty empty.
i know the plane coming to land is not a big one, and it can probably use only 800 meters of the runway, but still, having two other plane on the runway is weird.

cristi, the last image update KML that Google posted was a network link. In other words, that one is the last one we'll need. It'll populate automatically when you click it to display. When Google releases the most recent set of updates, it'll simply appear in that link. Just save the network link in your My Places folder somewhere and when you want to check if the update is up yet, click the placemark it to make it visible.

The mining town of Moatize, Tete province in Mozambique has also been updated, pity that the updated area is so small

Also about Haiti, you can see lots of navy ships in the bay west of Port au Prince. Also updated Jacmel area (canadian ship)

Alsay, ah! I understand. The situation is something of an illusion I think. The aircraft taking the pictures seems to be making passes running in a north-south line, not east-west. That means there could be plenty of time between the time that the images was taken involving those aircraft on the runway. It's difficult to judge the width of the image strips, but it's possible each aircraft was snapped in a different pass entirely.

I like the new imagery of Ireland. I have been waiting years for those areas to be shown. My question is however why no Streetview in Ireland? I passed the Google Streetview Car in my local area about 18 months ago but Ireland is yet to be invited to the party.

The network link has updated, showing February 10th 2010 as the date of this update.

Can one tell the exact date/time an image in Google earth was taken? When I use Google earth, free version, the dates in the slider (historical images view) and at the bottom of the screen do not always agree. Which one is correct? I'm sorry for posting this off topic, but I don't know where to go to find this information.
